During this school year, the Titans welcomed our new English teacher, Ms. Carlton, who teaches two classes of English 1-2 Honors and three classes of English 5-6. TRANSITION “The students that I currently have are really conscientious, caring of their work, and have strong skills to support their perspectives; I personally think it is very important for students to read the works in class and they all follow along,” Ms. Carlton said.
Prior to joining San Marino, Ms. Carlton taught in a Charter School for two years in San Diego and a comprehensive high school for over twenty years and taught grades nine through twelve. She was an administrator for two years as an Assistant Principal. In addition, Carlton has experienced coaching, advising student government, and organizing and writing reports for the WASC, Western Association of Schools and College, which essentially gave the school accreditation.
Now, as a faculty member at SMHS, she feels like part of a community and enjoys how close-knit the departments are. “I love how much of a community the high school feels like and I love the hospitality of everyone including my fellow department colleagues and the administration,” she said.
However, she didn’t always have plans to pursue a career in teaching. Mrs. Carlton originally pursued a career as an attorney, completing a plethora of internships and jobs in law. “I went to school in Richmond Virginia with a major in Leadership studies, and originally thought I wanted to go to law school since I was a proposal writer for an architecture company for several years. However, I went out into the world and realized that I wanted to do one-eighty and become a teacher to help the future generations,” she said.
Outside of school, Mrs. Carlton partakes in a variety of activities such as running and watching her daughter play tennis. Mrs. Carlton has, so far, greatly enjoyed her time at San Marino High School, and is excited for what the rest of the year will bring.
