Snow is often thought about as a winter delicacy, allowing many to partake in fun snow day activities such as building a snowman or having a snowfall fight. However, recent levels of snow have proved to be detrimental towards American society. From the East Coast, to the Midwest and further, society has experienced an unexpected blanket of white that poses issues within the residents of this country.
Being one of the most heavily affected areas during this snowstorm, the East Coast has experienced unusually low temperatures that has proved to be tedious. Popular cities such as New York City and Boston have experienced an abundance of snow, proving to be overwhelming through residents’ everyday lives. The colossal amount of snow has affected transportation, as either the snow or ice has blocked off many roads, leading to limited means of transportation. Although snow is normal in these areas of the country, these unusually large amounts have proved to be tedious.
In addition, the Midwestern states have experienced abnormal amounts of snowfall, as temperatures have been expected to be in the negatives. Although not as extreme as the east coast, many lives have been negatively affected. It was reported that over two dozen individuals have died in the state of Tennessee due to the severe weather, proving that the weather has proved to be detrimental. In addition, with the midwest holding the majority of crops and cattle in the United States, the winter storms have impacted the resources produced. With this winter storm, the so-called “heart” of America is now in jeopardy.
Lastly, the southern parts of America that don’t usually receive snowfall to this degree are arguably affected the most. Since these areas of the United States don’t regularly have these extreme weather conditions, they simply are not prepared for them. Many residential areas were not built in mind of the freezing temperatures, causing the areas to go into ruin during this time of disaster by knocking down electricity. Freezing temperatures have also caused roads to freeze, limiting travel especially in the southern areas who aren’t prepared, causing cars to skid due to the lack of traction. This unexpected weather in the parts of America that typically don’t experience freezing temperatures has proved to be harsh.
Though this storm is seen as brutal and dangerous on the outside, there is some good to this winter storm. On the popular app “TIkTok,” many have found themselves following trends based off of the extreme weather. Ranging from ice skating outdoors to freezing ramen noodles to create a sculpture, these activities would not be possible without the “dangerous” storm. In addition, the overwhelming amounts of snow have proved to be beneficial to the places in America where a drought is common. Although the drought is not completely solved, this heavy amount of snow has proved to be beneficial. Thus, although the winter storms have caused destruction to society, there have also been some underlying benefits.
