Before the end of every quarter, ASB holds a school-wide assembly to celebrate our school’s student athletes and VAPA performances. This year, our spring assembly featured a few additional performances, some highlights from sport speeches, and a few hilarious moments from a relay game, while maintaining the grandiose and scholarly atmosphere that makes San Marino such a great school.
The assembly opened up with a performance by Emi Heller, 12, and Lindsey Segimoto, 12, as a preview to our schools musical, Zombie Prom. They performed a piece called “Rules, Regulations, and Respect” that incorporated the entire musical cast dancing an extremely catchy choreography.
Afterwards, cheer gave another one of their energizing performances, and were followed up by Robotics. As usual, Robotics shot out a few T-shirts with their improved T-shirt cannon, but this time, people were surprised by the emergence of Robotics Spirit Captain Nhat Hyunh, 12, and his new sword costume. “The costume was made by me, Celine Chih, 12, and Ryan Wang, 12. It was something that we were super proud of and excited to showcase at the assembly,” Hyunh said. During their allotted time slot, Robotics Engineering President Gavin Morris, 12, also introduced their new robot for their upcoming season and its game, Symphony, and invited everyone to attend their Rollout event on Saturday.
Following that surprising but fantastic moment, ASB hosted a game of charades featuring teams made of Aayan Khan, 12, Daniel Chen, 12, and Taylor Tan, 12, and another team of seniors with Jasmine Magallanes, 12, Sophia Armendariz, 12, and Ava Kibbee, 12. Despite some initial competition, the team of girls eventually broke away and won the game after Daniel Chen failed to convey running on a treadmill to the rest of his team.
Following that, sport teams came up onto the stage for some representation and to give a few speeches. While they initially went smoothly, a memorable moment of the speeches was the boys Golf team, where numerous people noticeably not on the golf team came up to give speeches.
Following those speeches and a sports video, ASB Frank President came up onto stage to notify the audience about the upcoming ASB elections, and then select players from each of the sports teams came up to play a relay game featuring Magic Carpet, Eat the Cookie, Cup Flip, and Pop the Balloon. During the relay, Peter Chen, 10, and Christopher Deng, 12, both struggled to complete the Eat the Cookie game, as the cookies kept off falling off their faces onto a floor. The struggle escalated to a point where both were given free passes, and Chase Mena, 9, and Ryan Wang, 12, both put in strong performances to guide their team to victory.
After the relay game, DCO held a performance featuring a few choreos from their upcoming Dancetra Open Calls, which consist of a K-pop open call, and two hip-hop open calls called “The Purge” and “Ready Player One”. Following their performances, the assembly closed off with a jeopardy game, which was won by Steven Loose, 10, despite him answering “Paris” as the country that gave the U.S the Statue of Liberty and claiming “Atlanta” as the capital of Florida.
