Each year, students applying to or who are eager to learn about potential universities have opportunities to be introduced to and learn about a variety of schools. So far this year, many schools have visited, such as UC Irvine, Pitzer College, and UC San Diego. However, by far the two most attended ones were from the two largest schools in Southern California, being the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) and the University of Southern California (USC). UCLA’s admissions representative was here on Monday, September 16, while USC was here two days later on Wednesday the 18th. Through these appearances by the schools, students were able to get a basic understanding of the essence of the schools and whether or not they would fit on the campuses for the next four years of their lives. “It was really insightful and it was great to have the opportunity to ask questions to the admissions representatives,” Helene Miller, 12, said.
This opportunity to ask questions is something that students here are lucky to have, a certain other nearby schools lack this opportunity to have events with admissions officers. Nathaniel Eberwein, 11, who attended the UCLA meeting, said “I loved learning more about a school that I really want to attend.”
In these meetings, topics discussed included potential majors, an overview of student life, the elite athletics of both schools that are now members of the Big Ten Conference, and questions about financial aid. Students had the opportunity to ask questions such as how much AP scores were weighted in the application process and how switching majors is a largely difficult process at both schools, especially due to their large size. “Overall, the events allowed me to gain a better understanding of two of my top schools,” Eberwein added.
