Veterans Day is an annual holiday celebrated on November 11th, it’s a day to honor and recognize the numerous men and women who have served in the United States Armed Forces. It’s more than just a day off from school, but it’s also an important reminder for students of the sacrifices of those who dedicated their lives to protect our country. “Veterans Day celebrates the service and sacrifices of all who have served for this country. We get to recognize the contribution of every veteran who has worn the heavy weight of being in the military and protected this nation,” Priscilla Yan, 10, said.
Originally, Veterans Day was named Armistice Day in 1919, which marked the end of World War 1. However, over time, it became known as a holiday celebrating all U.S. military veterans, giving us an opportunity to thank them for their bravery, dedication, and the challenges they had to endure while serving. “Veterans Day is an important holiday because it provides an opportunity for Americans to truly appreciate those who have served our country,” Kay Huang, 11, said.
In our daily lives, it’s easy to overlook the people who protect this country but Veterans Day serves as a reminder for us to reflect on their dedication to our country. Additionally, for high school students, the holiday acts as a way for us to appreciate the importance of service and the responsibility those that serve carry. There are various ways students can show appreciation on Veterans Day; they could write thank you cards to veterans, participate in local events, volunteer veteran organizations, or even donate to veteran charities as a form of gratitude.
Overall, Veterans Day is more than a mere holiday, it’s a day to celebrate those who have served our country, remind ourselves to thank all U.S. veterans for their sacrifices, and honor the dedication it takes to protect this country.
