When most people think of fun games to play, activities like hide n seek and bean bag race pop up, but the most popular of them all is dodgeball. Everyone has played dodgeball at least once in their life. With the simple rules, and competitive atmosphere, dodgeball was the perfect game for Link Crew. Link Crew is a prestigious organization in high school, where a select few are chosen to guide the freshman. As a Link Crew Leader, it is their responsibility to make the freshman feel welcomed and give them a very important first impression of the high school lifestyle. Wanting to have an event where freshmen could make new friends, Link Crew Leaders theorized on engaging and fun activities they could plan. After many unique ideas, dodgeball was ultimately settled on.
There would be 8 teams, consisting of around 10 freshmen and 2 Link Crew Leaders, who would face off against each other in a bracket style tournament. The prize consisted of free in n out, enticing students to want to win. In the first matchup, team 3 would get crushed by team 1, eliminating all the players in under 5 minutes. “We all got hit pretty fast but we tried our best,” Bailey Mena, 12, said. The rest of the matchups were even, with one of the games going into overtime, where the allowed space was shortened. Eventually it came down to two teams, both led by Link Crew Leaders who also played baseball. Immediately after the whistle was blown, 3 time varsity starter Johanthan Wilson, 12, nailed two freshmen to give his team the lead. Ultimately JJ led his team to victory, securing the prize for his team. “I had a great time playing and I can’t wait to eat that In n Out,” Wilson stated. Dodgeball will be an event at San Marino High School for years to come, now being apart of its culture.
