With the first semester coming to an end, the dance department put on their annual dance show, In The Limelight. Performers from beginning, intermediate, advanced classes, and the prestigious Dance Company brought the stage to life. Over two nights, November 20 and November 21, audiences watched as students performed a variety of different pieces.
The show combined popular dance styles such as K-Pop and energetic modern dances which brought excitement to begin the show. In between energetic pieces, there were soft and solemn pieces, characterized by graceful movements that conveyed a story to the audience. From dances with high intensity of hip-hop to heartfelt elegance, the performers guided the crowd into a dynamic journey demonstrating the art behind dance.
The last show of the first act titled “Moulin Rouge” was one of the most popular dances of all, with the plot line combining all 4 dance classes together on stage. The dancers performed an upbeat and exciting piece paired with confetti and selective dancers running by the audience seats in the Neher to further engage the audience. All around the stage, dancers crowded every corner, showcasing the massive size of students performing in the dance show. “There was a lot of variety in the different performances and the visual effects made the show really entertaining,” Audience member Brandon Chuang, 11, said.
The amalgamation of music, lighting, and visual design elevated the show to new heights, becoming even more memorable with each show. “The SMHS dance shows are a really good way to get to know the dance department,” Advanced dancer Camillia Penn, 10, said.
Dance company concluded the show with their final number, leaving the audience in awe of their precision. As the last note of music echoed through the Neher Theater, the dancers stood tall —— tired, but filled with excitement at the thought that all of their hard work had paid off.
As the final curtain fell after the dancers bowed, the deafening applause was a testament to the passion and energy which the dance department had poured into this dance show. After the dance show, family and friends crowded around the dancers and congratulated their success with flowers and gifts.
With two more dance shows to come, the dance department continues to amaze the students and family members with their production quality and unique choreography. One down, two more to go!
