Luau: the day that all San Marino students look forward to. Marking the end of the school year, ASB hosted an annual school Luau on May 30th, which featured a shortened school schedule followed by 3 hours of fun. Many students looked forward to signing each other’s yearbooks and shirts, the food trucks, as well as other numerous activities. As the bell rang at 12:05, a mass of students rushing out of their classrooms and towards the football field could be witnessed, as the powder puff game was about to commence. Unlike traditional football, the “gender roles” of this game were reversed, with girls playing flag football and boys cheering them on. Grades divided, cheering for opposing teams of juniors versus seniors. Both teams played their hardest, with the score being tied for a majority of the game at 8-8. However, due to weather conditions, the referees decided to decide the next team to score as the winner. In the scorching sun, the Seniors made a play which would result in a touchdown, and the Seniors would be crowned victorious. Back in the quad, multiple activities were taking place. Students crowded the lunch lines to pick up their yearbooks, flipping through pages to find themselves and their friends once they received them. Luau also featured caricature artists, palm readers, and balloon artists, all services which experienced long lines due to immense popularity. The lines for food trucks were also extensive, with students crammed together, hoping to purchase tacos from Chanos, burgers from Austyn’s burgers, or a sweet treat from either Fluff Ice or Paradise Ice Cream. Yet, students were excited for different activities on Luau. “I mostly looked forward to watching the powderpuff game and taking photos with my friends at the photo booth. Overall, I’d say that the event met my expectations, and I felt that was a nice moment to relax before finals” Mimi Bernstein, 11, said. On the other hand, some students were more hyped for the food. “I was really excited to purchase a masterfully crafted taco from Chanos. I also purchased a sweet treat at the Fluff ice truck. The mango fluff ice was a 10/10” Adam Li, 11, said. All in all, Luau was a day to remember for all students, a break from all the chaos before finals begin.
