The deafening blow of a whistle rebounds across the Titan football field, followed shortly by an outbreak of cheers from the home side: the girls flag football team has just begun their season. The varsity flag football team performed at their opening game in the best way possible. Easily handling their opponent, Sacred Heart of Jesus Los Angeles, the girls forced a closeout game, ending the game with a score of 49-0. An already impressive feat, this accomplishment was made even more outstanding when considering the ups and downs that the team faced before the game. With no pre-season and tryouts ending just a few days before, the girls had only one practice to prepare for their season opener– a mere hour and a half to run through and memorize offensive plays. It was no wonder that many players felt some nerves coming into the first quarter. “I felt a little nervous coming into our first game, especially since I play defense and we didn’t get the opportunity to practice defensive plays due to the little time between tryouts and the game,” Sloane Maling, 11, said. Despite this, the team pulled off an astonishing performance. “I knew that this would be a great game for us within the first minute of the game. We stepped out for the first time on offense, Lily threw an amazing pass to Keilani, who ran in for a touchdown on the first possession. It was definitely an amazing moment for us all,” Sophia McNulty, 12, said. The highs of the first play continued on throughout the game, with each player cheering for their teammates when someone made an excellent play. Highlights continued to be made as Maling scored a pick 6– intercepting a pass and scoring a touchdown– with supportive cheers following her from the bench as she ran. “I feel that each girl got her chance to really shine on the field,” McNulty said.
