Back to School Night gave families a chance to reconnect with the school community and meet the teachers who will guide their students through the year. Back to School Night is a day for parents to come to school to meet and experience how their students’ new teachers instruct and provide feedback. Parents worry about their kids as much as students worry about grades, so naturally parents would want to get to know the people who will be spending the next 10 months supervising their academic prowess. “When I went to Back to School Night on 9/4, I didn’t know what to expect, as my son has always had trouble communicating with his teacher, but his new chemistry teacher really helps him understand the new concepts,” Mr. Zhu, sophomore Nathan Zhu’s dad, said. Back to School Night helps many parents discover who and what their students’ new teachers are like. It can also help foster a collaborative partnership between teachers and families by showing insight into the classroom environment, learning curriculum, and daily routines, throughout the year. “When I walked into my daughters Math Class I was surprised to be greeted with such a nice teacher who kindly told us to take our seats, totally different from what my daughter described her as,” Mrs. Liu, sophomore Isabella Liu’s mom, said. By going to Back to School Night, parents are able to communicate with their kids’ teachers to be able to understand what some students might say about their teachers and how to help them continue learning. The following day after Back to School Night was a minimum day. This was to allow for the teachers to get a slightly longer weekend due to the number of hours they had to stay at school for Back to School Night. By opening the doors of their classrooms, teachers and parents took the first step toward building a stronger partnership that will support students for the rest of the year.
