The boys water polo team recently placed third at the Warriors tournament at Buena Park High School, securing them a ranking in the top 50 SOCAL high school teams. The tournament took place on September 19th and 20th. The Titans have been fortunate enough to get a new assistant coach for their season. Coach Andres Madrigal, despite it being his first tournament with the team, performed exceptionally well, calling plays and guiding the varsity to win three out of four games. “Overall they did great, but as far as listening and executing tactics, they didn’t do very well. If they executed and played a little better, then 2nd place would have been a cinch. But for this next tournament I believe we can do it as long as we work on our team play, such as 6 on 5 plays, so that we can improve to rise to 1st,” he said.
Out of the four teams that San Marino played, St. John Bosco ranked number two in CIF Division 2, was by far the toughest team they played at the tournament. Though the team pushed themselves very hard, the game ended in a close 5 to 9 loss. “I believe the team works together well in terms of making the right choices from possession to possession but it’s a fact that we need to play for each other instead of making selfish plays. Also, other areas we can improve on are our communication and awareness” Team Captain Nathan Chan, 11, said.
With a solid tournament and a team determined to refine its teamwork, the Titans continue on with their season aiming for the CIF Championship.
