The Titan Boys Water polo team faced off against the La Cañada Spartans at home on October 14th in an intense Rio Hondo League matchup. Coming off a narrow 13-12 loss to Palos Verdes, the Titans entered the contests determined to bounce back, regain confidence, and defend their standing as the league’s top ranked team. In a thrilling back-and-forth battle, San Marino ultimately prevailed with a 16-14 victory.
The Titans’ quick offense plays, and strong defensive stands helped them establish an early lead in the first quarter. “We started off pretty strong. However, I think we let our lead get into our heads and we started thinking about keeping our lead instead of just playing our game,” Captain Nathan Chan, 11, said.
The Titans had opened their season with six straight victories, a streak that showcased the team’s chemistry, discipline, and skill. Despite the obstacles in this particular game, the Titans demonstrated composure and resilience, refusing to let the momentum slip away. With their record and reputation as the No. 1 team in the Rio Hondo League, the Titans entered the matchup as clear favorites over the No. 3 La Canada Spartans, but the close score showed the competitiveness of the league.
Looking ahead, Chan remains ambitious, hoping to improve and win even more next season. The Titan Boys Water polo program focuses now on furthering the boys’ commitment at the midst of changes in league structure. The hard-fought match against La Cañada wasn’t just another game however, but a reminder of the team’s relentlessness and ability to follow through on team goals, a statement of perseverance and pride.
