Yom Kippur, the holiest day of the year in Judaism, signifies peace and honor. However, on October 2, 2025, the day of Yom Kippur, a terrorist attack unfolded at the Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation synagogue in Manchester England.
Yom Kippur is celebrated through a 25-hour period of fasting, prayer, and introspection that marks the end of the High Holidays and extended prayer services. However, this celebration became somber following an attack. The attack, beginning with a vehicle ramming into pedestrians was followed by a stabbing spree, and ended with police taking the life of the attacker. The attacker was identified as Jihand al-Shamie, a 35-year-old British citizen of Syrian descent. The incident was declared a terrorist attack later October 2, 2025.
Two worshippers, Melvin Cravitz (age 66) and Adrian Daulby (age 53) tragically lost their lives. Cravitz died from wounds inflicted from the attack, while Daulby was accidentally shot by police. Three others were also injured in the attack; one struck by police gunfire, one stabbed, and the other hit by the weaponized vehicle. Witnesses reported “suspicious activity” from al-Shamie, with al-Shamie being rejected entry and then returning to his vehicle. It was also revealed later that al-Shamie phoned 999 and claimed responsibility and proclaimed his loyalty to the Islamic State. Possible motives are unclear, but authorities have been investigating possible extremist influences. Al-Shamie had an ongoing criminal record, actively being out on bail for an alleged rape charge at the same time of the attack.
Six individuals have been arrested under suspicion of involvement, although there is not much information released for public knowledge. However, the Jewish community, especially in Manchester has become shaken heavily. Prime Minister Keir Starmer called this attack a deliberate targeting of Jews and pledged emphasized security for Jewish institutions. Overseas, Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu expressed solidarity and argued that weakness in confronting antisemitism allows for further attacks like the attack leashed on October 2nd, 2025, to repeat.
