Coming off a disappointing 2023 season, the girls Varsity Volleyball team is hoping to strike back and take first place in the Rio Hondo League. This squad consists of multiple varsity veterans and new fresh faces. These additions include freshman Ariminty Yu, 9. Leading the team with a staggering 140 digs, Yu has been a great addition to the squad. The 2024 roster is led by co-captains Chloe Wang, 12, and Sydney Park, 11, both of whom have been on Varsity since they were freshman, gaining experience and knowledge from their peers. “My Duties are to motivate the whole team and make sure everyone is playing and having fun,” Wang said. Wang currently leads the team with aces and assists, while having the second most amount of total blocks, while Park is second in kills and aces.
Starting off hot, the titans faced off against Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy for their season opener, who would easily be defeated, with the Titans taking three sets to Flintridge Sacred Heart’s one. MVPs of this game include Audrey Hoffman, 11, and Giuliana Reitzell, 10. Hoffman had eleven kills and four aces, while Reitzell had nine total blocks. The Titans continued their winning ways in a tournament, winning three games and losing two. These games would prepare the team for their next match against the athletic powerhouse Maranatha, a private school highly dedicated to their sports department. Knowing this match would not be easy, the Titans practiced hard and smartly planned for their match. As a result, the Titans pulled off an unbelievable upset against the minutemen of Maranatha High School, sweeping them 3-0. Hoffman again led the team with thirteen kills while Wang had a 66% kill percentage, with eight kills. “Some of our players knew the people on the Maranatha team, knowing their tendencies and best moves. As a result we kept an eye out for these players, being ready for their attack,” team member Maddy Tang, 11, said.
There are high hopes for this year’s Girls Varsity Volleyball team, and hopefully they will be able to keep their winning streak and take first place in the Rio Hondo League.
