Girls varsity volleyball kicked off their league season, securing a 3-set win against the Monrovia High School Wildcats. On Thursday, September 11th, at 5:15, after a two-set win by JV, varsity competed head-to-head against a league competitor. After 8 preseason matches against schools like Bishop Amat, Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy, and Maranatha, varsity was able to secure a win for their first league match. In future hopes of competing in the California Interscholastic Federation also known as CIF, San Marino will have to battle it out against other schools in the Rio Hondo League in order to secure a bid.
Specifically in the state of California, CIF functions as an organization that provides athletic competitions available to both public and private high schools. Under the Rio Hondo League, San Marino will compete against Temple City, South Pasadena, Blair, La Canada, and eventually rematch up against Monrovia again, but at Monrovia High School. To complement their win, girls volleyball also held a Fluff Ice Fundraiser at the gym circle as students, players, and spectators purchased the mixed dessert with the qualities combining both ice cream and shaved ice. “These games are super important because if we don’t secure as many points as possible, there might be a chance we can’t showcase our skills in CIF,” Phoebe Chen 11, said.
Securing this win was crucial to San Marino because they were able to not give up a single set to the Wildcats and it benefitted the overall record that San Marino holds. After the win, San Marino’s record consisted of 9 wins and 7 losses with a league record of 1 win and 0 losses. Each set is crucial to the success of the team as their standing in the organization tallies down to the number of points gained. San Marino will compete against both the Temple City Rams and La Canada Spartans the following week on Tuesday and Wednesday, both home in the big gym.
