A now annual tradition as this point, the Student vs Staff Basketball Game pits seniors and school staff to answer the school’s most pressing question once and for all: Are students better than teachers?
The game, which featured a roster of over 20 students, took place on Thursday, May 9th to great anticipation from both students and staff. The game featured much more interactive pregame promotion from both sides with teachers and students both promoting their respective sides. For example, Mr. Hollinger and Mr. Penafuerte both conducted interviews with ASB, regarding their basketball skill and multiple reels of the teachers’ practices were posted on social media platforms as well. While the game was a major school event, it did take place during school hours to the dismay of many students and teachers. “I really needed some extra time to study for APs so I just left the campus and went back home during the game,” Caleb Newton, 11, said. Still, those who stayed enjoyed watching the game.
Led by the deadly duo of Mr. Hollinger and Mr. Franklin, the teachers got off to a hot start in the first quarter, ending the quarter with an 11 point lead. However, the seniors soon pulled the game back, with the help of clutch points and strong defense from Kyle Lei, 12, and the senior were leading by 1, with a score of 20-19. The third quarter was a tightly contested one, featuring strong defense from both sides and entering the 4th quarter, the score was tied at 30-30. However, while the quarter initially featured major back and forth action, the teacher’s got off to a hot streak and went on a blistering 10-0 run, which ultimately iced the game for them.
The game ended 48-39 with the teachers coming out victorious. While there were plenty of moments where the game was in close contention, some teachers believed that the result was never in question. “The student staff game was rough for me. While my back and knees were hurting, luckily the rest of the staff really pulled together. I think our all-girls squad really stepped up during the game,” Mr. Hollinger said. “We won. We are always going to win.”
